Hi everyone,

One of the reasons I haven’t been as active here is because I’m pretty active (and one of the moderators) for the subreddit /r/BeautyBoxes. It has a lot of information about the most recent unboxings, discount codes, and more. It’s my baby – let me know if you have any comments about the CSS for it!

Unboxing Boxycharm September 2014, Fashion week fabulous!

Standard

Hi everyone!

I got my September Boxycharm today. I’m glad about the colors this month. (Last month got some really odd colors for my color profile.) Overall I like this box, though I’m getting kind of sick of getting Hello by Harvey Prince. It has been in literally every subscription box I’ve gotten. I’m so glad about the Tarina Tarantino collab with boxycharm, I’m really pumped about this mascara! New subscribers to boxycharm get the hyperlight we got in an old box, so this is exciting. Ths is a pretty good fall themed box with dark NCLA nail polish, perfume, lip gloss (ick), mascara, and fall colored eyeshadow.

This box also included 2 coupon codes:

  1. 10% off mynamenecklace.com – BOXYCHARM
  2. 20% off tarte.com – FALLBOXY (10/10 – 10/24)

All of the items laid out

This is the intro card to the box:

Items listed on card included

The items!

Tarte lipsurgence lip gloss in tipsy:

This was the color I wanted so I’m glad I got it. Still not the biggest fan of lip gloss though.

Coastal Scents London Go Palette:

I really wanted the Moscow one, but this was my second favorite. I’m glad there is a red shade in this! Coastal Scents is an ok brand, but I’ve never had a problem with them. Their eyeshadows aren’t always so pigmented, but I love the Revealed palette I have from them that is a dupe of Naked 1 and Naked 2 from Urban Decay.

London Go Palette

Closeup of London Go Palette

NCLA Nail Lacquer

I love funky nail polish colors, and this dark color is perfect for fall! I’m so sick of the red/pink nail polish.

Tarina Tarantino Mascara (Fleur de lash)

I need a new mascara, and this came at the perfect time. I like the look of the brush on this, but it looks a little clumpy. I’ll see how it goes after using it for a bit.

Harvey Prince Hello

I actually already bought the full-sized version of this with Birchbox points. I wear it sometimes. I really like the scent, but this has been in literally every subscription box I’ve seen. I wish they’d move onto a new scent. ಠ_ಠ

Final Ipsy September Spoiler, “Street Style”

Standard

Hi everyone! Here is the final spoiler for the September 2014 Ipsy bag:

This is an exciting bag because it is pretty much all makeup!

And that bag is really nice. It looks to be the same size as the Beauty Rocks bag, but much more tastefully designed.

Birchbox Weddings!

Standard

Birchbox just launched a new service called Birchbox Weddings! You can find it here (non affiliate – just the website)

See screenshots of it below! You basically get the modern mermaid box if you spend $90+ in subscriptions or gifts. I don’t think the modern mermaid box is that great, but these could be a cute little gift for your bridesmaids or something. Though I think it’s kind of a small and slightly impersonal gift.

This is cool though:

You can order special boxes for your bridal party! (email bridal@birchbox.com)

Unboxing Birchbox July 2014: Power Up!

Standard

Hi everyone. This month was an exciting month for Birchbox because you got to pick one of your samples!! I, being a nail polish addict, picked nail polish of course! (If you want to see what the choices were, check out my previous post here.)
This month I received:

  • Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner
  • Ruffian Nail Polish Ambrosia
  • Ruffian Nail Polish Remover
  • Naobay Body Lotion
  • Real Chemistry 3-Minute Peel
  • 100% Pure Shower Gel

This box is a partnership with Women’s health, and they have challenges all month in the booklet! They’re kind of silly, but look like a ton of fun. 🙂

Items Received and Value Breakdown:

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner
Full Size- 0.04 oz $16.00
Sample Size- 0.03 oz $12.00

Thoughts: Nice, deep black.  Just another eyeliner.

RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer – Ambrosia
Full Size- 0.17 fl oz $11.00
Sample Size- 0.17 fl oz $11.00

Thoughts: More silver than lavender, small as hell.

RUFFIAN Dressing Room Nail Lacquer Remover Towelettes
Full Size- 10 count $12.00
Sample Size- 1 count $1.20

Thoughts: There are better cheaper removers than these, e.g. LA FRESH. Don’t waste your money, they don’t work well.

Naobay Body Radiance Lotion
Full Size- 250 mL $24.00
Sample Size- 30 mL $4.25

Thoughts: Smell fades fast (a plus in my book), but feels kind of sticky at first.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel
Full Size- 1.7 fl oz $48.00
Sample Size- 0.17 fl oz $4.80

Thoughts: Cool? Haven’t tried it yet, but I am intrigued.

100% Pure Gingerade Shower Gel (Honey Cream Wash)
Full Size- 390 mL $15.00
Sample Size- 10 mL $0.38

Thoughts: This isn’t bad, but nothing special.

Total Value = $33.63

Overall thoughts

This box is much better than last month’s value of $12.23. I honestly think this box is better curated because it seems like one of their more generic boxes for those that picked the ruffian polish, which is understandable. That being said – it is ridiculous that the ruffian full-size is 5 mL. For real?! Even Julep, who is notorious for having bullshit small full sizes, is better than this. It is bad when Julep is better than you. The color is okay, thought it would be a little bit more lavender. It’s more silver tinted lavender than lavender tinted silver. The eyeliner is nothing impressive, it goes on nicely, but not sure the staying power is good. It is a nice deep black though. Don’t even waste your money on those nail polish removers though. For considerably less, the LA fresh ones are much cheaper and work 10x better. The rest is ok. It’s an okay birchbox, but not a great one.

See unboxing pictures below:

This is the card that came with it:

And here are the values/descriptions they gave:

All of the items laid out:

The booklet with 12 challenges! You can do these challenges and tweet @birchbox with pictures tagged as #powerupchallenge and #giveaway and you might win something!

Swatches of ruffian ambrosia on my accent nail…. on second thought I am really loving this color!!

Unboxing Birchbox June 2014

Standard

Hi everyone. My June Birchbox came super late this month. I wonder what’s up with Birchbox. This month is kind of meh for me, and I’ve been dancing around the idea of cancelling. Birchbox was my first subscription box, but they’re really just not impressing me that much. That being said, I did enjoy at least one sample per box for the past year or so.

This month I received:

  • Suki exfoliating cleanser
  • Coola tinted face cream
  • Folle de joie perfume
  • Perlier Body Cream
  • Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Palette

I’m excited that they sent me the Coastal Scents Palette for ants. I think I’m getting sick of all the face/body cream samples though.

Items Received and Value Breakdown:

Suki Exfoliating Cleanser
Full Size- 4 oz $32.95
Sample Size- 0.2 oz $1.65

Coola Matte Face Cream
Full Size- 1.7 oz $36.00
Sample Size- .17 oz $3.60

Folle de Joie eau de perfume
Full Size- 3.4 oz $98.00
Sample Size- 0.06 oz $1.73

Perlier Body Cream
Full Size- 6.7 oz $28.45
Sample Size- 1 oz $4.25

Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Palette
Full Size- 1 Set $34.00
* Note, the price for the palette is $19.95 on CoastalScents.com
Sample Size- 1 mini $1.00?

Total Value = $12.23

Overall thoughts

This box is pretty meh~ Birchbox, you’re not really impressing. I’m allergic to the perfume (did a test spray and broke out in hives/rash – but not surprising because I’m allergic to a lot of things), and coola is always annoying. Stop trying to make Coola happen, Birchbox, it’s not going to happen.  This is a pretty low value box, with the highest value item being the body butter.

See unboxing pictures below:

This is everything all laid out. This month was a partnership with JetBlue. If you fill out the where to next form you could win roundtrip JetBlue tickets.

A closeup on all of the items. Not bad, but not really impressive.

Coastal Scents Palette for ants:

The colors are beautiful, but that matte brown is definitely in their Revealed 1 palette that I have. This will be good for traveling though, so not upset.

Coola face cream:

There is almost nothing in this sample….why?  I feel like Birchbox overpushes Coola and I just don’t want it. STOP TRYING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Here are swatches of Coola on my hand. It definitely feels a little greasy. Also really off color.

I like this body butter, I’ll definitely use it. It’s a French brand? But the main feature is italian. It looks pretty nice though and I love the feel of it on my skin. Not too greasy and smells decently good.

The back if you’re interested. Only for adults though. keke.

Suki cleanser:

This smells just like lemongrass pho. If you’re hungry, you’ll be craving Pho when you smell this. That being said, if you don’t like lemongrass this is reallllllly strong.

I do love sugar scrubs though and this is a nice one except for the scent.

Jouer perfume:
Smells pretty good, and I wish I could wear it. But when I sprayed this I broke out in hives/rash. If you’re allergic to trees/pollen I’d be careful with this one.

Unboxing Sunset45 Lavish Box June 2014, New Tribal

Standard

Hi everyone!

Delancy, the founder of Sunset45, sent me a box of her just released subscription service to review. If you would like to read my interview with her as to her motivations behind this box, you can find it here.

What is  ?

Sunset45 is a monthly subscription box that offers you an affordable and wearable way to keep up with runway trends. Each month you will pay $30 to receive $100 of curated jewelry, perfume, sunglasses, and other accessories. This will not be like other subscription boxes where everyone receives the same items and there is only one pricier items with 2-3 cheaper items, each item will be worth the money.

Cost: $30
Cycle: Monthly
Types of Items: Jewelry, accessories, perfume, etc.
Number of items: 3-6

The Unboxing!

This is always my favorite part.

This was fit into a priority mail envelope, and it came in around 3-4 days. Pretty fast!

Every box comes with a Runway card, describing how the items relate to what is on the runway now.

This month’s theme is New Tribal, as seen on the above runway shows.

Elements of the runway trends can be incorporated into your wardrobe, such as the warm gold, rich colors, and geometric shapes.

NOW ONTO THE ITEMSSSSSS

I love the variety in this box. You can really create a full look with these accessories from head to toe, literally. I’m kind of torn about this necklace, because while it follows the trend, I think it doesn’t really mesh with my style. I’ll try it and see, because I have been wrong about pieces I initially wasn’t a huge fan of. Everything else is A+ in my book. I can definitely picture myself doing a mini-spa day with the Thai face mask and the Nails. Additionally, these earrings are my favorite piece in the box. I love the vibrant color, warm gold, and the mix with pearls and gems! Another highlight of this box is the custom Hello Waffle blush, an indie brand that is adored by many (myself included!).

Items received:

  • Nyx butter lipstick in BLS10 (Hot Tamale) – This is a warm red. – $6 (link)
  • OPI Nail Polish in Dating a Royal – This is a nice creme royal blue that doesn’t stain the nail. – $7-9
  • Hello Waffle blush in At Least I’ll Look Pretty – A cool pink – $1.50 (link)
  • 7th Heaven Face Mask in White Thai mud – $3 (link)
  • Jinji Earrings
  • Nona Necklace

Total value, non jewelry = $17.50-19.50

So to have two more jewelry items for the remaining ~$10-12, is a very good value! Even if you don’t like one of the jewelry pieces, the value of the box will still be much more than what you paid.

Nyx Butter Lipstick in BLS10 (Hot Tamale)

This is a warm red lipstick leaning a little orange. It goes on nice and creamy, and once it sets (~1 min) it lasts for hours. It is very hydrating. Nyx butter lipstick is my favorite lipstick, over a lot of my high-end lipsticks. So I was really excited to get this lipstick, also in a red. I tend to only buy pinks, but it’s good to branch out – and this helps me dress along the trend!

The outside

The curve on this lipstick is nice to get the inner corners!

Pulled Out

Swatched on my hand:

Swatched (on NW13 skin)

OPI Nail Polish in Dating a Royal

This is a creamy royal blue that is a good complement to the bright red lipstick. I thought it would be more navy on, but it’s more of a royal blue.

Front

As you can see in the swatch below, while the bottle looks navy, it’s actually a nice royal blue:

Source: google images

Jinji Earrings

I love everything about these earrings. They fit into my style and wardrobe so well! I really love the colors on this.

Nona Necklace

Note: this is my attempt at being artsy:

The picture tries to show what this necklace looks like hanging. Below is it laying flat, so you can see the detail.

This is a very long necklace. You can see how long when it’s hanging on me:

It goes almost to my wait. I think I need to figure out how I can wear this/what I can wear it with. It’s definitely a statement piece, but I might shorten it a bit.

Overall thoughts

This is my second box, and it is also a hit with me. All of the pieces, except the necklace to me, are easy pieces to assimilate into your collection. I really love that each month this box brings the current runway trend to your home. I tend to put my head in the sand sometimes when it comes to fashion, so it’s really nice that Sunset45 does it for you. The quality of all these pieces is very good. As long as you like one of the jewelry pieces in the box, it’s paid for. The overall value of this box is always more than what you pay for, so  I definitely love it for that. 10/10 would purchase.

Thanks Dede 🙂
